Istanbul Weekend Guide: Ferries, Food and Phone Tips

An Istanbul weekend is easier to plan around a few neighbourhoods than a long list of sights on both sides of the water. This guide combines a visit around Sultanahmet, a ferry crossing towards Kadıköy and practical preparation for meals, maps and mobile data.
For vegan travellers, that approach has another advantage: time to read a menu, ask about ingredients and find a second option nearby. Build the trip around places you want to explore, with a little preparation for the meals in between.

Give the historic centre a quiet start

If the major sights around Sultanahmet are on your list, check their official visiting information before you arrive. Choose one principal visit for the morning, allow time for any queue and leave the rest of the day less tightly planned. A short walk and a relaxed lunch are easier to enjoy when the next booking is not already approaching.

Save a few restaurant options near the area where you will actually be. A useful recommendation on the far side of the city may not be useful when you are hungry. Check current opening hours and recent menus rather than relying on an old list, and keep a backup within walking distance.

Make the ferry part of the visit

A ferry crossing offers a change of pace between neighbourhoods. The city operator Şehir Hatları lists services connecting Kadıköy with Karaköy and Eminönü; check its current timetable and notices for the day you travel. Give yourself time to find the correct pier, and keep your next plan flexible if the weather changes.
On the Kadıköy side, build the afternoon around a neighbourhood walk and the meal you want to have there. You do not need to cross back immediately just to fit another sight into the same day. Check your return route before settling in for the evening, especially if your accommodation is some distance from the pier.

Ask about the whole dish

When eating vegan, a dish's name or appearance is not enough to confirm its ingredients. Ask about stock, butter, yoghurt, cheese, eggs and sauces, as appropriate, and explain what you avoid. Preparations vary between kitchens, so a dish you enjoyed elsewhere may be made differently here.

Keep a short note on your phone that you can show the staff, with a translation checked before the trip. Save promising places on a map, but leave room to choose another restaurant if the answers are unclear. The aim is a good meal, not a stressful search for one particular address.

Using a Turkey eSIM in Istanbul

A data connection helps with a ferry update, a menu translation or a message to your host. Check your existing roaming allowance first. If you need a separate option, Horizon’s Turkey eSIM plans offer prepaid mobile data for compatible, unlocked phones.

Install over reliable Wi-Fi before departure and follow the supplied instructions. The plans are data-only, without a local number or ordinary calls and SMS; messaging apps can use the connection. Hotspot sharing is included and uses your purchased data allowance. Check the coverage, validity and current price of the selected plan before buying.

Review which SIM is selected for mobile data and turn off unwanted roaming or automatic switching on the home line. Keep your hotel address, essential bookings and a map available offline too, because reception can vary.
